Mr Jonathan Carter MBE
Chief Engineer-Stealth,
Atlas Elektronik UK
United Kingdom
From the mid-1980s I have been involved in tactical exploitation of the underwater environment. Initially I worked for the UK Admiralty Research Establishment supporting the Royal Navy and mostly in submarines through ocean science, sensing and acoustic programmes. In the early 1990s I was seconded to DSTO Australia for a 2 years to devise a sonar tactical aid to support the Oberon Class. On return to the UK I worked on specifying future sonars and, assessing and improving in-service active and passive sonars on ships, submarines and helicopters. A decade or so ago I shifted focus to assessing, understanding and improving acoustic signatures. However, the ‘exploit the environment' thread has remained a core theme. My expertise in using the ocean-acoustic environment to improve tactical advantage has been described as "formidable". This must be correct - in 2021 I was honoured to be made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for my Services to Naval Operational Effectiveness. I've spent a year or so on ships and in submarines and am Atlas Elektronik UK's Chief Engineer – Stealth where I work within a multi-disciplinary team of talented scientists, acousticians, mathematicians and engineers.
