Major General Mark Totten CBE
Major General Mark Totten is Director SSN Capability in the Defence Nuclear Organisation and Senior Responsible Owner for SSN-AUKUS, acting as the MoD 2* lead for AUKUS Pillar 1. He heads the SSN Directorate, overseeing Astute, Combat System, Nuclear Propulsion and enterprise infrastructure programmes.
Previously Director Navy Staff - Navy Command Headquarters Chief of Staff - he managed the Royal Navy’s portfolio, digital capability, infrastructure and climate change preparedness. His early career included operational tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, and senior roles such as Chief of Staff at 3 Commando Brigade and Commanding Officer of 42 Commando.
His career moved to programme leadership in 2019, leading the team that developed the Future Commando Force concept. After concept approval at the Integrated Review of 2021, he became the SRO for Commando Forces transformation, leading the generational shift in Commando Forces capability. He was awarded a CBE for his leadership of the Commando Force programme.
In 2023, he joined Defence Equipment and Support as the Deputy Director of the Weapons Operating Centre, covering procurement of all non-strategic weapons systems. In this role he led the DE&S effort to construct a pan-Defence munitions procurement strategy.
